MEA Summons Bangladesh High Commissioner After Threat to Indian Envoy

The Government of India on Wednesday summoned Bangladesh’s High Commissioner, Riaz Hamidullah, after the Indian High Commission received a threat. India has formally raised the matter with the Bangladesh government.

The government has not revealed details of the threat but has treated it as a serious security issue. The move came a day after remarks by Hasnat Abdullah, a leader of Bangladesh’s National Citizen Party (NCP), about isolating India’s North-Eastern states and sheltering separatists.

No action or counter-steps have been announced so far. Officials say this is a diplomatic protest, and further details are awaited.

Abdullah threatened India with revenge

Abdullah said at a rally in Dhaka on Monday that any attempt to destabilize Bangladesh would have consequences beyond its borders.

Without naming India, he warned that if Bangladesh’s enemies were given shelter, Dhaka could also support separatist groups in India’s northeastern “Seven Sisters” region. He added that Bangladesh could harbor anti-India forces, a remark that drew applause from the crowd.

The rally was held after last week’s deadly attack on Sharif Usman Hadi, a radical leader of the Inqilab Manch. The group has blamed India and Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League for the attack.
