Class 4 Girl Faced Long-Term Bullying; Teacher Ignored Repeated Pleas Before Tragic Jump

A CBSE inquiry has found major failures in safety, child protection, and school response at Neerja Modi School, Jaipur, after the death of a 9-year-old Class 4 student who jumped from the fourth floor on November 1.
According to the report, the child had been facing continuous bullying for nearly 18 months, including hurtful comments with sexual references. Despite this, the school did not take effective action.
Teacher ignored repeated cries for help
On the day of the incident, the student approached her class teacher, Puneeta Sharma, five times within 45 minutes, asking for help. Instead of listening, the teacher allegedly scolded her in front of the class.
CCTV footage showed the girl happy in the morning, but after 11 am, she appeared upset and embarrassed when classmates displayed inappropriate content about her on a digital slate. She tried to get it removed, but the teacher did not step in.
Bullying complaints were reported earlier too
The CBSE report revealed that the child and her parents had raised bullying concerns multiple times:

September: Her father complained to the teacher, who told the child to “adjust with other kids.”

October: A boy falsely quoted her publicly; the coordinator did not intervene until the parents followed up.

May (previous year): Another bullying incident was reported, but no action was taken.
The committee stated that the school and the class teacher were aware of ongoing harassment but failed to provide protection or counselling.
CBSE: Teacher’s failure to respond was a major factor
The report says the tragedy could have been prevented. It states that the death resulted from the teacher’s “non-response, lack of sensitivity, and failure to listen.” Timely intervention, empathy, or even basic support could have changed the outcome.
Urgent need for stronger safety measures
CBSE has stressed that schools must strengthen child protection guidelines, monitor bullying more strictly, and ensure students have access to safe spaces and supportive staff.
The incident has raised serious questions about accountability, student safety, and the role of schools in preventing bullying.
