Google-Backed Solar Mega Project to Power Next-Gen AI Data Centres

Global technology giant Google is in advanced discussions to support one of the world’s largest renewable energy initiatives by sourcing clean electricity from SunCable’s massive solar project in Australia’s Northern Territory. The project, backed by billionaire entrepreneur Mike Cannon-Brookes, is designed to generate large-scale solar power capable of supporting energy-intensive AI data centres, addressing the rapidly growing carbon footprint of artificial intelligence infrastructure.

SunCable’s project includes expansive solar farms paired with high-capacity battery energy storage systems, ensuring consistent and reliable power delivery even during non-sunlight hours. The renewable energy generated will not only supply future AI data centres but also strengthen regional power grids and reduce dependency on fossil fuels. While the full financial commitment has not yet been publicly disclosed, the project is expected to involve multi-billion-dollar investments, making it one of the most significant renewable energy infrastructure developments globally.

This move reflects a broader shift among technology companies toward direct renewable energy procurement, rather than relying solely on carbon offsets. As AI adoption accelerates worldwide, clean energy-powered data centres are becoming critical to meeting corporate climate commitments. By aligning AI growth with renewable energy expansion, this initiative demonstrates how technology and sustainability can evolve together to build a resilient, low-carbon digital future.
