A coalition of major technology companies — including Google, Stripe, and Shopify — has committed $44.2 million to accelerate carbon removal technology by purchasing carbon credits from a Canadian company called NULIFE GreenTech. This initiative is organized under Frontier, a group launched in 2022 that aims to catalyze carbon removal solutions by guaranteeing upfront revenue for emerging technologies. Instead of investing in equity or R&D directly, members of the coalition pre-pay for high-quality carbon removals, providing predictable demand and funding for innovations that often struggle to compete with traditional carbon offset markets.
NULIFE GreenTech’s process involves converting agricultural and industrial waste into a specialized bio-oil, which is then stored deep underground in salt caverns with long-term stability. Under the agreement, around 122,000 metric tons of CO₂ will be removed and sequestered between 2026 and 2030, with the potential scalability of this technology reaching up to 1.5 gigatons of annual CO₂ removal by 2040 if widely adopted. Frontier plans to invest a total of $1 billion in carbon removal credits by 2030, reflecting growing corporate interest in tangible, measurable climate impact. This funding approach tackles one of the climate tech sector’s key challenges — commercial viability of removal technologies — by creating early revenue certainty and supporting real-world deployment.
